Background and context

Blood pressure is the lateral pressure exerted by blood on the vessel walls while flowing through it. Blood pressure is expressed in terms of systolic pressure (the maximum pressure during cardiac muscle contraction) and diastolic pressure (the minimum pressure during relaxation of cardiac muscle). In adults, the normal blood pressure is 120/80 mmHg.
