Background and context

The cardiac cycle can be defined as the sequence of muscular contraction and relaxation events during a complete heartbeat, which is regulated by electrical signals. It contains two principal events, the contraction of the cardiac muscle is called systole, and the relaxation event is regarded as diastole.
