Background and context
Insects are arthropods that have jointed appendages that allow movement, feeding, and reproduction. They also have a rigid but jointed exoskeleton made of chitin, which protects insects, prevents their dryness, acts as an attachment to muscles, and allows them to move. Insects are also segmented, meaning that their body parts appear in repeating units. The segments are combined to form a head, thorax, and abdomen. The head consists of a pair of antennae, a pair of compound eyes, and a pair of simple eyes. While the abdomen contains internal organs, the thorax has three pairs of legs and one or two pairs of wings, if any.
