Background and context

The ancestors of early animals may have been marine protists that lived in colonies. Scientists believe that the cells of certain colonies of protists became specialized for different functions. After some time, specialized cells began to require each other to survive. Thus, the first multicellular organism evolved. One type of sponge cell, the coenocyte, looks like a protist cell.
