Background and context

The pancreas is an endocrine gland that is located in the abdomen between the small intestine and the stomach. It produces two types of hormones; insulin and glucagon. There are clusters of endocrine cells in the pancreas that form islets of Langerhans. These islets of Langerhans are made of two types of cells: alpha cells and beta cells. Insulin and glucagon control the sugar levels in the blood.
