Background and context

Lipid-derived hormones can easily cross the lipid bilayers of the plasma membrane and do not need any receptor molecule to move through the plasma membrane. These hormones can directly affect the target cells. On the other hand, amino acid-derived hormones and peptide hormones cannot cross the plasma membranes of cells directly. They need surface receptors located on the surface of the plasma membrane to stimulate a signaling pathway which in turn stimulates an intracellular activity.
