Background and context

Hormones are chemicals released by certain endocrine glands that stimulate the target cells to cause a response. Hormones help in communication between cells and tissues in different parts of the body and in maintaining homeostasis. 

They are of three types: amino acid-derived, lipid-derived, and peptide. Amino acid-derived hormones are small molecules like epinephrine and norepinephrine. Lipid-derived hormones have structures similar to cholesterol and these include steroid hormones like testosterone and estradiol. Peptide hormones include proteins and hormone receptors.
