Background and context
The epidermis on the lower side of leaves contains tiny openings called stomata that are surrounded by a pair of guard cells. Guard cells are bean-shaped structures that contain chloroplasts. The subsidiary cells lie between the guard cells and the epidermis and protect the cells in the epidermis when the stomata open.
