Background and context

Photoperiodism is a process in which plants control flowering based on the periods of light and darkness. Long day plants are plants that require less than 10 hours of darkness for flowering. Many of the summer flowers such as poppies, asters, and vegetables such as spinach and lettuce are long-day plants. Many nurseries control the length of the day and night to promote or delay the blooming of flowers.
