Background and context

Leaves play an important role in photosynthesis, exchange of gases and transpiration. Sometimes leaves need to adapt to their surroundings for the plant’s survival. For example, desert plants either produce a waxy coating on their leaves or get modified into spines to minimize transpiration. In rainforests, the plants that are not very tall have broad leaves to catch as much sunlight for preparation of food.
