Background and context

Based on the type of nutrition, animals are classified into herbivores (eat plants), carnivores (eat meat), and omnivores (eat both plants and animals). Herbivorous animals such as cows, sheep, and goats whose diet is entirely based on the consumption of large amounts of plant-derived roughage or fiber are called ruminants. They have the ability to digest large amounts of cellulose.
