Vitamin D is actually a hormone and requires activation to facilitate absorption of calcium by our bones. Our vitamin D levels are controlled by intestinal absorption (foods like fish, liver and milk) and through UV radiation of our skin. It used to be that skin was an adequate method for vitamin D synthesis, but that has become less the case in recent history. Why do you think we don't get enough vitamin D synthesis from our skin anymore?
