Document Summary

Chapter 5 integumentary system: the integumentary system: includes the skin, hair, nails, and glands (sweat, oil) Its main functions: protection, body temperature regulation, retrieves sensory information, and metabolism. Has a chemical barrier that is slightly acidic and antibiotic skin secretions kill many microorganisms. Melanin (what gives our skin its color) secretion prevents uv damage. Has biological barriers, or live cells like epidermal dendritic cells (langerhans"s cells in charge of immune response, epidermis), macrophages (large blood cells active when there"s a cut in the dermis) Body temperature regulation: sweat, vasodilation (opening vessels), and vasoconstriction (closing of vessels) of dermal vessels (there is no vessels in the epidermis) Sensory information: shallow is the meissner"s corpuscles and merkel cells (where epidermis meets dermis, acts as a pressure sensor for fine sense), and free nerve endings for pain and temperature. Deep are the pacinian corpuscles (gross sense found in lower dermis), hair follicle sensors, and free nerve endings for pain and temperature.
