Background and context

Ribosomes are cell structures that are found in all prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. They are either found floating in the cytoplasm or attached to the endoplasmic reticulum. Some ribosomes are also present on the cytoplasmic side of the plasma membrane. Ribosomes are involved in the synthesis of amino acids which are building blocks of proteins.
