Background and context

All living organisms are made of one or more different types of cells. Cells are very small in size, so we cannot view them with our naked eyes. Microscopes are instruments that can magnify an object and hence, they are used to observe cells and study them. There are different types of microscopes available today: light microscope and electron microscope being most commonly used.

There are two types of electron microscope: scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope.
