Document Summary

Sports such as golf have players and audiences that typically are wealthy and of higher social status. This is why companies invest in golf and advertise when golf is playing because those watching have the money to spend. Market economies always favour the interest of those who have the power and resources to in uence which sports are selected for promotion and coverage. If a sport is not considered important by those with power, it will not be given cultural signi cance. Sport participation during childhood leads to spectator interests during adulthood: media coverage and spectator interest: television has the greatest effect on spectator involvement. It increases access to events and athletes worldwide, and provides a unique presentation of sports. Tv recruits new spectators by providing a means of learning the rules and strategies of a sport without purchasing tickets, and increases the number of people who will buy tickets in the future.
