Document Summary

Sports has been used as public entertainment though history but has never been as commercialized as they are today. Economic organizations and large corporate interest have so much power and control over the meaning, organization and purpose of sports. Sports today are evaluated in terms of gate receipts, concessions, and merchandise sales, licensing fees, media rights contracts and website hits. Athletes are evaluated in terms of their entertainment value as well as physical traits. Corporate interests influence team colors, uniform designs, event schedules, media coverage and the comments of announcers during games and matches. Commercial sports are organized and played to make money as entertainment events. Priority is usually given to the sports that are watched or played by people who control economic resources in society. Market economies always privilege the interests of those who have the power and resources to influence which sports are selected for promotion and coverage.
