Plants can't utilize the 78 percent nitrogen that is present in the air because they can't use it. Some plants rely on soil microbes to absorb nitrogen, which means they convert nitrogen from the atmosphere (N2) to fixed nitrogen (such as nitrate [NO3-] or ammonium [NH4+]), which plants may absorb and utilize.
