Background and context

Stomata are found in the bottom epidermis of leaves. In singular, it is called a stoma and it appears as a small hole with two guard cells around it. Gas exchange, as well as water loss, occurs with the opening of the stomata. To avoid water loss or hazardous oxygen accumulation within the plant's cells, plants must be very cautious about opening and closing the stomata.
