Background and context
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is organized into highly compact structures so that the division of the nucleic material is easy to handle. The segregation of the genome into daughter cells requires the DNA to be organized into compact, condensed chromosomes. These chromosomes are then divided amongst daughter cells in the karyokinesis.
