Background and context

Epithelial tissues are a type of tissue found in multicellular organisms. These tissues form the outermost cover of the organs and the structures in the body and it also forms the lining of the lumens. These tissues can exist in a single layer or in multiple layers to form the covering. Based on the shape of the cells, epithelial tissues are classified as squamous, cuboidal, columnar, and transitional. Also, these can be classified as simple or stratified epithelia based on the number of layers.
