Document Summary

What type of staining is gram staining? (selective, differential, enrichment, etc) To understand and master the technique of gram staining to differentiate between gram negative and gram positive bacteria. The gram staining technique was developed by hans. A danish physician who in collaboration with other physicians was working on identifying the cause of pneumonia in 1884. Found that some cells lost their color when excess stain was washed off. This staining technique separates bacteria into 2 groups: The difference in staining outcome is due to differences in the structure of the cell wall of the two types of bacteria. Gram staining is almost always the first test performed in the identification of bacteria. Contains more than one dye and not all bacteria retain the same dye or color after the staining process. Iodine combines w/ the crystal violet in the cell to form a crystal violet-iodine complex with peptidoglycan thereby staining the cell.
