Document Summary
Psl301 lecture 16: the respiratory system and breathing. Reaction of oxygen with organic molecules to create energy, co2, and water in the form of atp. The exchange of gas between outside environment and body"s cell. *oxygen is diffused passively through several layers of thin tissues during gas exchange. Regulates ph breath faster/slower, change in co2 regulates acidity of blood. Internal intercostals (exhalation will cause reduction of the distance between rib cages and lung) Function: serve as a passage for air from mouth/nose to deep into lungs: warm air to 37 degrees, humidify air to 100% -- tissue needs to be moist, filter molecules, vocalization. Conducting system (just moving air through tubes) ----- . 1st bifurcation: right and left main bronchi. Filtering action of cilia: cilia move mucus to pharynx. Mucus layer can trap bacteria/pathogens cilia can push mucus toward pharynx trouble in eliminating particles. Primary lobule contains 300 million alveoli 300 micrometer diameters.
