Darwin"s big idea: origins of evolutionary thought, development of darwin"s idea. Species have been specifically created by a designer/creator: ex. A tree in the desert was created with the ability to survive and live in its environment. First to use the term "evolution: his ideas of evolution were not widely accepted at the time. Darwin provided the first comprehensive theory of evolution and was the co-discoverer of the chief mechanism : natural selection. 2 basic ideas: all organisms have descended with modification from common ancestors, the process leading to adaptation is natural selection operating on variation among individuals. Initially, darwin was meant to become a doctor like his dad: could not handle blood, so he dropped out of med school and went to the university of. Gradualism: darwin reads lyell"s book "principles of geology", 1830. Lyell argued that present day geological processes can explain the history of earth: however, he believed that species stayed exactly the same.
