Population extinction --> across entire range of one population of one species, all the potentially unique genetic variation, all function and services, last individual of the last population. Species extinction --> entire species not just one population. Article main points (annihilation, biological 6th mass extinction article) Likely underestimates urgency and extent of biodiversity loss. Puts focus on entire species instead of loss of specific populations. Two critical aspects of biodiversity crisis are neglected because of focus on species-level extinctions. Disappearance of populations nearly always precedes species extinctions. Exception is when there"s only one population, then it"s 100% species extinction. Decrease in numbers of individuals within remaining populations. Deceases in numbers means that their capacity to provide services also becomes skewed. Biological annihilation -->erosion of ecosystem services that are essential for humans. See diagram where species are going extinct, critical in places of low diversity.
