Psyc 335 - chapter 14: moral development: morality: Research focuses on 3 facets of morality: (i) affect the moral emotions, such as empathy & sympathy (ii) cognition the way children think about their own & other"s behaviour (iii) behaviour how children actually act. Morality can be broken down into domains by looking at rules: (i) moral rules: broad issues of fairness & justice (ii) social conventional rules: rules used by society to maintain order. Morality has different components: (a) thought processes that underlie morality are assessed in moral reasoning studies (b) behaviours that are governed by morality are assessed in studies of moral conduct. Moral realism: view rules as being externally dictated commands put in place by people in positions of authority, Tend to evaluate moral situations largely in terms of their physical & objective consequences. Objective responsibility: evaluate moral situations on the basis of the amount of damage done, not intentions.
