Kohlberg- levels of moral development: preconventional (child), (post)conventional. Parents are not aware of how much are lying and how sophisticated they are. By school age- reasons for lying more complex: avoid punishment, increase power/ control, bragging to assert status, and learning they can fool parents. Majority of 6 yr olds who frequently lie have it socialized out of them by 7. If lying successful strategy to handle dif cult social situations, a child will stick with it. About 1/2 kids do- and if they are still lying by 7, they are hooked for childhood. Most disturbing reason children lie is that parents teach them too (not explicitly, but see parents lying, so learn it is okay)
