The ability to track probabilities & distributions is innate. These abilities are not unique to language, & are also applied to other domains (ex. tracking visual input) Phonology: the study of speech sounds: the listener must be able to divide the continuous stream of human speech into various segments & attend to other characteristics, such as intonations, pauses, stress place at different points, etc. Recognize which sounds more commonly occur together in order to isolate individual words.
