In a experiment, we damaged sperm from sea urchins with UV light and then placed them with sea urchin eggs, but no fertilization occurred. When we damaged the egg from sea urchins and introduced sea urchin sperm fertilization happened. Why was there no fertilization in the first experiment but the second experiment had fertilization?
