A 65-year old male patient who was a cattle rancher (400 acre ranch) migrated to the US from Australia after an 18 year ranching career. While rancing, he spent a lot of time bailing hay and dispensing hay to the cows. Never one to go to the doctor, now that he is older he wants to be near his children in Arizona. He presents with a cough, producing blood-stained sputum and occasional mild fevers and shortness of breath. Upon examination the patient's detailed history revealed that he was given a course of antibiotics for a complaint of chest pain that he endured for several months a few years ago. He remembers not taking any more of these medications after the first round of them. These symptoms are reoccurring now, except that the symptoms are more severe. The sputum is sent to the laboratory for culture and it is presumptively reported that there are many filamentous structures seen in the sample. Question: What type of laboratory evidence would you need to verify the type of organism in this sputum sample?
