Lecture 8 bio220 deadly viruses and the evolution of virulence. Ebola virus: spread via direct contact with contaminated material, through air, extremely virulent. Virulence: the additional mortality rate that a pathogen imposes on an infected individual (the host: parasites that harm their hosts thereby harm themselves, over time, the coevolution of pathogens and their host will lead to a mutualistic association. Instances of highly virulent pathogens are cases where the host-pathogen relationship is recent. Myxoma virus: to control rabbit population, virulence declined over time.
