Document Summary

Chapter 2- the chemical basis of life i: atoms, molecules, and water. In most atoms, the number of protons and electrons are identical: number of neutrons may vary, entire atom has no net charge, but the nucleus is positively charged. Each element has a unique number of protons: atomic number: the number of protons in an atom. Isotopes: an element that exists in multiple forms that differ in the number of neutrons they contain: radioisotope: an isotope found in nature that is inherently unstable and usually does not exist for long periods of time. Ionic bonds involve an attraction between positive and negative ions. Ion: an atom or molecule that gains or loses one or more electrons and acquires a net electric charge: cations: ions with a net positive charge, anion: ions with a net negative charge. Ionic bond: occurs when a cation bonds to an anion.
