Document Summary

Accomplished by variable tcr alpha and beta chains. Occurs at cell surface: signal transduction. Tcr recognition: alpha and beta chain recognition, gamma and delta chain recognition. Tcrs with delta and gamma chains are mostly at epithelial cell surfaces. Recognize lipids and other organism-associated molecules (things other than processed peptides) Without processing and presentation on mhc class i or ii molecules. 1st line of defense in skin and gi tract. Like a t cytotoxic cell: recognition of polyclonal activators. Polyclonal activators bind to tcrs of many or all clones of t cells, regardless of t cell specificity. Bind directly to tcr beta chain and mhc class ii molecule. Result: activation of large numbers of t cells; can cause toxic shock syndrome. Systolic blood pressure of 90 mmhg or lower for an adult. Desquamation (skin falling off as they"re recovering) during the recovery phase. Massive immune response due to excessive cytokine release.
