MAN 3025 Chapter Notes - Chapter 15: Organizational Communication, Jargon, Crowdsourcing
Document Summary
Communication- transfer of information and understanding from one person to another. Efficient communicator - transmit message accurately in the least time. Effective communicator - intended message is accurately understood by the other person. Decoding - interpreting and trying to make sense of the message. They can be used without time-zone difference but fail to convey the precise message because of lack of tone of voice and body language: media richness - how well a particular medium conveys information and promotes learning. Face-to-face communication being the richest (convey more info) and impersonal written media (newsletter, reports) being low in richness. Males and people with extroverted and agreeable personality characteristics tend to use media high in richness. Age has no impact on media richness preference: rich medium: best for nonroutine situations and to avoid oversimplification (eg. new employee benefits). Using a rich medium for routine matters (eg. monthly sales reports) results in information overloading the delivery of more information than necessary.
