Chromosomes consist of a single long linear dna molecule. Homologous chromosomes- the maternal and paternal copies of a pair of chromosomes. Sex chromosomes are not homologous when there is a y chromosome. Dna hybridization- a technique used to visualize chromosomes with fluorescent dyes. Karyotype- an ordered display of all 46 chromosomes. Gene- a segment of dna that contains instructions for making a particular protein or rna molecule. Genome- the total genetic information carried by all the chromosomes. May be evolutionally useful, as it takes up space. This portion of extra dna is highly conserved among species. Gene number is roughly correlated to organism complexity. Some are attached to particular sites of nuclear envelope or nuclear lamina. Telomeres- at end of chroms, cap the ends of the dna molecule. Attaches to mitotic spindle in a way that allows 1 copy of each chrom to be segregated to each daughter cell.
