Document Summary

Bio130 textbook notes chapter 4 (dna, chromosomes, and genomes): pg 202-206, 208-218. Eucaryoic dna is packaged into a set of chromosomes. The 24 chromosomes (22 pairs common, 2 sex chromosomes) of the human genome each have long dna molecule with proteins that fold and pack dna into compact structure (together called chromain) Chromosomes also have rna and proteins for gene expression, dna replicaion, and dna repair. Homologs(homologous chromosomes) are maternal and paternal pair of chromosomes (two copies of same) Nonhomologous chromosome are x and y (sex chromosome) Dna hybridizaion is when labeled nucleic acid strand serves as probe that localizes complimentary strand. Human karyotype is display of 46 human chromosomes at mitosis. Gene is segment of dna that contains instrucions for making paricular protein or rna molecule. Chromosomes in many eucaryotes carry a lot of interspersed junk dna. The nucleoide sequence of human genome shows how our genes are arranged.
