Document Summary

Chapter 8 joints: joints: site where two bones meet. Many bones with many joints provide more movement options than few bones with few joints. 3 main types of joints: fibrous, cartilaginous, and synovial. Bones are joined by fibrous connective tissue (dense regular/irregular connective tissue). Amount of movement depends on the length of fibrous tissue (if bands are close together there is very little movement, further apart means more movement). Types of fibrous joints include sutures, syndesmoses, and gomphoses. Short seam of dense fibrous (regular/irregular) connective tissue. The bones are interlocked with them for security. There is no movement, but they allow growth. They are ossified as adults (you still see the line, there may just be more bone tissue) Bones joined by ligament (cord or band of fibrous connective tissue: dense regular). If bands are close together there is very little movement, further apart means more movement. It is longer than sutures. ie. joined ligament between tibia and fibula.
