Office hours: 10-12 mondays or by appointment only. *supplementary readings may be assigned to promote understanding of some topics on an as needed basis. As an introduction to the discipline of sociology, this course is a general education course in the area of social science. It introduces students to areas of sociology, including major theoretical perspectives and theorists, logic and techniques of research, social organization, institutions, inequality, and social change. The goal of such courses is to ensure lsu graduates demonstrate an understanding of factors associated with global interdependence, including economic, political, psychological, cultural, and linguistic forces. We will take a varied approach to the traditional lecture format that will occasionally be supplemented with audio-visual aids and guest lecturers when available. The method of instruction for this course will be a combination of lecture, class discussion, and interactive exercises. Learning as well as teaching, is an interactive and participatory process.
