Office hours: tuesday and thursday 1:30pm-2:30pm, or by appointment. Credit will not be given for this course and socl: major subject areas and principles of sociology. This class is intended to provide you with a broad overview of sociology, the scientific study of human society and social behavior. We will cover some of the basic theories and research methods sociologists use to examine the social world. In addition, this course will introduce you to topics such as the following: relationships between individuals and groups; socialization; deviance and crime; social class inequality; race/ethnicity; gender; and social institutions such as the family, religion, and the education system. The goal of this course is to develop your sociological perspective the ability to think critically about the connections amongst individual experiences, history, and the workings of society. This is a general education course in the area of social science.
