Vagina: flexible muscular structure that extends 3-5 inches back and upward from the vaginal opening. Birth canal, allows menstrual flow to pass from uterus, encompasses penis. Aroused: inner expands while pressure from engorgement causes many small blood vessels in wall to produce lubrication. In response to stimulation, lubrication occurs w/i 10-30 seconds. Lubrication for conception (more hospitable to sperm--alkalinizing the usually acidic vagina), reduces friction (more pleasureable), prevents small tears in vagina (small tears make vagina more vulnerable to hiv) Majority of sensory nerve endings concentrated in lower of vagina: introitus. Most sensitive to erotic pressure and touch. Prior to first penetration, partially covered by hymen (thin membrane containing large number of blood vessels) Blood on nuptial sheets proof of virginity (hymen was intact) No evidence that cosmetic genital surgery is safe or effective. Inner has virtually no nerve endings (can"t feel tampon) Grafenberg spot (g-spot): area inside body surrounding the urethra.
