Instincts: all born with instincts (not the same as animal instincts). We are all born with: life instincts: any instinct or mental energy involving trying to sustain life. Were really interested and emphasized sexual instincts libido : death instincts: tendencies towards aggressive and destructive behaviour (towards ourselves and others). We"re born with them, they"re here to stay, the best you can do is deal with them. Not a physical brain structure, more conceptual in nature. He believed that the structures interact with each other at an unconscious level. The outcome of this battle will influence your behaviour and personality: id: the structure that contains the instincts. The only structure present at birth. (sexual tensions etc) think of it as a balloon where the sexual impulses and energy builds up (like a balloon). Wants to release this energy, so it wants to lash out. The one word that best describes the id is pleasure.
