Not all methods are positive (binge eating, drinking, etc ) Positive psychology: area of psychology that studies what makes people thrive, even in the face of extreme stress, uses scientific methods to study human strengths and potential. Optimism: the tendency to have a favourable, constructive view on situations and to expect positive outcome. Pessimistic: tend to have a negative perception of life and expects negative outcome. Pessimistic explanatory style: which is the tendency to interpret and explain negative events as internally based and as a constant, stable quality. Optimism is correlated with physical health good attitude helps with illness. Other explanations optimism and pessimism people will have different life styles: the nun study disapproved this. Looked at nuns with similar lifestyles by reading their autobiographies different attitudes were coded.
