Coping: processes used to manage demands, stress, and conflict. Both problem-focused coping & emotion-focused coping are used. Positive psychology: uses scientific methods to study human strengths and potential. Most powerful tool for coping is focusing on positive emotions. When people watched positive films after scary movie clip, heart rate returned to normal faster than those who viewed a sad or neutral films. Optimism: tendency to have favourable, constructive view on situations and to expect positive outcomes. Pessimists: tend to have negative perception of life and expect negative outcomes. Optimism has health benefits: pessimistic women with hpv have less white blood cells, optimists had lower incidence of coronary heart disease than pessimists. Big five personality traits: neuroticism: people high in neuroticism have negative affectivity (tendency to respond to problems with a pattern of anxiety, hostility, anger, guilt, or nervousness) Make it difficult for people to choose coping strategy.
