Document Summary

Living organisms exhibit a variety of shape, sizes, colours, organs, ways of life and behaviours. All living forms have descended from a common ancestor. They are found in almost every habitat and have a variety of lifestyles. Out of the 1. 700,000 organisms named and described, over half of them are insects. Traits contribute to fitness of an organism by increasing chances of survival. Adaptation can be used in two ways: as a trait, as an evolutionary process through which traits arise. Darwin proposed natural selection in his book. Each generation has new traits and new adaptations created by mutations as well as recombination. Individuals possess traits that will help them survive and increase reproduction in which more offspring are left to increase fitness. Fitness: genetic contribution of individuals to the next generation as a result of differences of fertility and viability measured in the number of offspring produced. Variation in surviving offspring will result in natural selection.
