The body and mind develop according to powerful epigenetic forces, when nature and nurture continually interact. Growth patterns: weight and height increase and the relation between those two measurements changes. Nutrition: appetite decreases because young children naturally grow more slowly than as infants. Nutritional de ciencies: gender, ethnicity, and income correlate to body fat. Limited diet which should be balanced by parents (healthy foods) Brain development: size is 90% of adults. Corpus callosum: long, thick band of nerve bres that connect the left and right hemisphere of the brain and allows communication between them. Lateralization: referring to the specialization in certain functions by each side of the brain, with one side dominant for each activity (genes, prefer one side) Usually both sides of the brain are involved in every skill. Myelination: axons become coated with myelin, a fatty substance that speeds the transmission of nerve impulses from neuron to neuron (apparent in childhood)
