The first two years: body and mind: growth in infancy. Dramatic weight gain in rst year, slower in 2nd year but still fast. At 2 years old, children are about half their adult height and 1/5 their adult weight. Norm: average or standard, calculated from name individuals with in a speci c group or population. Percentile: point on a ranking scale (1-100), 50th is the midpoint where 1/2 the population is higher and half rank lower. When percentile changes in growth, this is an early sign of trouble which may be caused by dozens of medical conditions. Total sleep declines each week in infancy as well as how long they sleep in a stretch. Over the rst months, the time spent in each type/stage of sleep changes. Rem: stage of sleep characterized by ickering eyes behind closed lids, dreaming. Sleep varies due to age, genes, culture and caregivers.
