Maturation of the prefrontal cortex: sleep becomes more regular, emotions become nuanced and responsive, temper tantrums subside, uncontrollable laughter and tears are less common. Executive function: cognitive ability to organize and prioritize the many thoughts that arise from the various parts of the brain. Growth of the corpus callosum makes communication between hemispheres more ef cient. Lateralization: sidedness, specialization in certain functions by each side of the brain, with one side dominant for each activity. Myelination: axons become coated with myelin, which speeds the transmission of nerve impulses from neuron to neuron. Impulse control: ability to postpone or deny an immediate response to an idea. Perseveration: tendency to persevere in, or stick to, one thought or action for long time: thinking during early childhood. Preoperational thought: between the ages of 2-6. Children do not yet use logical operations (reasoning processes)
