Extent to which societies focus on ways to reduce uncertainty and create stability. How willing you are to initiate a risk (high uncertainty black and white thinkers, if something seems risky they"ll shut it down) Dogmatic they only see 2 sides (black/white, up/down) High uncertainty avoidance = spend a lot of time reducing risk because they"re uncomfortable with it. Low uncertainty avoidance = do not mind risk, can tolerate it. Extent to which the self-identification of a society"s members depend on individual characteristics or the characteristic of the group and the extent to which individuals or group interest dominate. Distinguish between in and out groups more sharply and more permanently than individual societies. Quick reminder: cultural variations such as individualism-collectivism run along a continuum they are not a dichotomy.
