Retrospective memory: memory for people, words, and events experienced in the past. Prospective memory: remembering to carry out some intended action in the absence of any explicit reminder to do so. Time based prospective memory: time is the cue indicating that a given action needs to be preformed. Event based prospective memory: some event provides the cue to perform a given action. Actions intended to facilitate goal attainment need to be preformed at the appropriate time. Many failures of prospective memory have trivial consequences, but sometimes can result in injury or death. There is a role of it in air craft accidents. Failure to adhere to recommended schedule of medication. Most important difference is their respective emphasis on the future or past, but there are several other differences. Rm generally involves remembering what we know about something and can be high in informational content. Pm focuses on when to do something and has low informational content.
