Retrospecive memory: memory for people, words, and events experienced in the past. Prospecive memory: remembering to carry out some intended acion in the absence of any explicit reminder to do so, time-based prospecive memory. Time is the cue indicaing that a given acion needs to be performed. Ex. phone a friend at 8 pm: event-based prospecive memory. Some event provides the cue to perform a given acion. Ex. passing on a message when you see someone. Ex. failures in prospecive memory play an important part in most aircrat accidents. Ex. forgeing to adhere to recommended schedules of medicaion. Prospecive vs. retrospecive memory: most important diference is the emphasis on the future vs the past, retrospecive. Involves what we know about something and is high informaional content: prospecive. Involves when to do something and is oten low in informaional content: more available external cues with retrospecive memory than prospecive.
